Lopburi
Jared and I are in Lopburi now, just north of BKK. We climbed the last two days. The rock was really sharp. But fun. It took 8 pitches and about 4 hours to get to the top and back. It was this really tall skinny mountain. The crag is about 40 min. away on motor bikes. The scooters are super fun. Traffic here is a very controlled chaos. Controlled in the sense that I didn't die, and chaos in the sense that I'm surprised everybody doesn't die.
In Lopburi right now there is some week long festival going on. Something about a king and 400 years ago...I don't really know, but the street food is awesome. We don't eat dinner, we just wander and sample. The music and party goes all night, and our bungalow is closer to the main stage than my seats were when I saw the Steve Miller Band in 1996. That and the bed bugs means we're not staying another night....
We're planning on heading up towards Chang Mai. There is supposedly some really good climbing up there...

Bangkok
Dear Mom.
Sorry I don't write....it's mostly my fault.
I'm in Bangkok right now. I've been here almost one week. We've been running around trying to figure out visa's. It's coming together, but has been kind of a pain.
Kyle is travelling around with a friend right now, and I'm sticking around here until Monday when I can pick up our passports from an embassy, which is hopefully going to have nice new visa's in it....
We spent about 2.4 weeks down in Railay climbing. We stayed on this beach called Tonsai. It's mostly all climbers. There are bungalows, restaurants, bars, a couple of quickie marts, some massage places and that's about it. It's about a 10 minute scramble up and over a small hill to get to another beach, which is more of a family resort place, called Railay.
Kyle and I stayed in the same place I stayed at last year. There were quite a few familiar faces, both employees and climbers. It's a really small place, and climbers from all over the world come here to climb, for months at a time. We met several people who were 2 months in to a 6 month stay...I think have ADD too much to consider devoting that much time to one particular thing (I know you're thinking "but charlie, you're going to ride your bike for longer than 6 months....", but I think that's different, we'll have different scenery every day....so I'm sure I'll be just fine....). And because I can't devote myself so intensely to climbing, I'll probably never be fantastic, but I climbed harder on this trip than I ever have in my life. It was fun.
The first day we were on Tonsai we ran into a couple of Kyle's friends from Anchorage, Jared and Suzie (in our 2.4 weeks there, I met eleven new people, all from Anchorage...). We climbed with Jared and Suzie pretty much the whole time. Suzie is doing some yoga thing on some island for the month of February, so when she took off, Jared decided to hang out with Kyle and I. And since Kyle has a friend in town that he's traveling with, Jared is going to come up to Bangkok and we're going to do some traveling.
I'm doing well. I like Bangkok a lot. I try and picture Dad here 35 years ago.... It kind of feels like I have some sort of connection to Thailand, only because Dad was here. I kind of felt the same thing in Denmark because of Ben. Because they had soo many experiences in these places, it somehow connects me to these places also...maybe not, but that's how it feels.
Isn't it your anniversary tomorrow or something? 127 years? ....I can't remember....
